Conversational hypnosis

Conversational hypnosis -- how does it differ from covert hypnosis? This is what most people have been mailing me about lately, so let's look into this...

To me, it's essentially two terms describing the same thing. The objective of conversational hypnosis as well as of covert hypnosis is to create a change in a person in a completely unconscious way. It's the use of language to influence the subconscious mind.

One distinction I came up with is that conversational hypnosis might be somewhat more involved with the NLP (= Neuro Linguistic Programming) techniques, whereas covert hypnosis focuses more on the aspect of storytelling and metaphor, but also very strongly encompasses other NLP techniques. However, the terms both mean the same in my mind.

OK... let's look at some basic elements of conversational or covert hypnosis. This is the basic model, a covert hypnosis formula if you will, that will bring great results:
  1. Get attention (and of course keep it by keeping them interested!)
  2. Establish rapport (pace)
  3. Lead a person in a hypnotic trance (focus their attention and bypass their critical mind)
  4. Slide in your suggestions

This is basically it. It can be done within minutes and sometimes two or even more steps can be achieved with a single sentence. It all depends on the qualification of your audience and your abilities (= practise!).

Each of these steps have been thoroughly researched and once one understands the core principles and gets a hang of the specific language and a way of thinking, he or she can become a master communicator with great abilities to instantly influence and persuade people.

Here are some great resources for you to explore (click on the links to open them in a new window):

To finally getting what we want in life!

P.S. Will you do me a favor? Check out the three courses above and grab at least one today. After you've gone through them, implemented the techniques and got more sales, got that date, got more great friends you can imagine, you'll look back at this moment and just knowingly smile and say to yourself: "Learning covert hypnosis was one of the best decisions in my life!".

When I think of conversational hypnosis I tend to think more along the lines of Milton Erickson and his style of indirect suggestion.

It is true that Bandler and Grinder modeled some of NLP off Erickson, but all those patterns really originate from Erickson i.e. Yes-set, illusion of choice, open-ended suggestions, embedded commands, etc.

Kevin Hogan, as far as I know, coined the term Covert Hypnosis, and his version seems to focus more on the psychology of persuasion than on hypnotic language patterns. He did include stories of course, and those who know Erickson, know he was a master of metaphor.

Put all this together and you've got a mighty powerful arsenal.

Very true, Allen. A great comment!

I think that through the years both styles evolved to the point that they basically use everything at disposal and in my opinion the terms became to mean the same.

Of course, it depends on the setting and who you ask :)

What you wrote are also my predominant feelings about the subject.

Take care.
